Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
Southern Wyoming contains a portion of the ninety-one mile Flaming Gorge Reservoir. This beautiful reservoir is within the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, that spans from Southern Wyoming into Northern Utah.
The reservoir was created in 1964, when the Flaming Gorge Dam was built in the Green River. Explorer John Wesley Powell named the gorge "flaming gorge" during his expedition of the Green River in 1869, because of the gorge's rich red cliffs.
After the construction of the dam was completed in the 1960s, the National Recreation area was established. The area is managed by the Ashley National Forest.
Fishing for rainbow trout and brown trout is a popular activity in this beautiful recreation area, along with boating, hiking, and Flaming Gorge Dam tours. After a day of fun exploring the area, travel a short distance north to Rock Springs.
