Fossil Butte National Monument
The Southwestern Wyoming city of Kemmerer is home to a must-see National Park Service site of historical fossils.
Fossil Butte National Monument is the place to view North America's best paleontological record of Tertiary aquatic communities, from the Green River Formation.
This 50-million-year-old lake bed, once the location of Fossil Lake, Lake Gosiute and Lake Uinta, resulted in the exquisitely, preserved insect, fish, reptile, bird, bat and plant fossils. This is a must-see attraction in Wyoming.
Schedule plenty of time in the park's visitor center to browse the wonderful exhibits of fossils, along with the variety of interactive displays, to learn more about this historical data.
Partake in a guided tour of the park, on one of the interpretive trails or participate in the collection of fossils at the fossil research quarry.
