Visit Poverty Point National Monument in Louisiana
When you find yourself in the northern part of Louisiana, pay a visit to the Poverty Point National Monument. It’s believed that this site is at least 3,000 years old. Its significance has come to light as it’s been declared a National Monument officially.
Explore this site with over 400 prehistoric earthworks, and you can also take a guided tour of the mounds. The area is sure to bring out the archeologists in all who visit. What’s most unique about the site is that the amount of earth that was moved by what was believed to be a people of hunters and gatherers.
Get your hiking gear on and check out the following must-see areas: Dunbar Mound, Bird Mound, and Ballcourt Mound. You’ll spend a fair part of the day there so be sure to prepare with the appropriate supplies. The area has picnic tables so have a seat and enjoy an afternoon there.
