Learn About Castle Clinton In New York’s Battery Park
Spend a delightful afternoon out on Battery Park in Manhattan and visit Castle Clinton and take a guided, ranger-led tour. This site was the first immigration station of the United States. Millions of people, including many renowned contributors to America such as Joseph Pulitzer and Nikola Tesla have visited.
It used to be a fort for the U.S. Army that was intended to protect New York from British forces in the War of 1812. It was then leased to the city as a public entertainment spot. It has functioned as a beer garden, convention center, theater, and was even the site of the New York City Aquarium for nearly a half century. In case you’re wondering, Castle Clinton was named after New York Mayor DeWitt Clinton.
You’d be hard-pressed to find an institution more central to the energy and flavor of New York and its history. It’s a great activity for locals and visitors alike.
