Fort Frederica National Monument

The British and Spanish fought over this site on St. Simons Island back in 1742, part of the struggle for control over Georgia and its coast. Today visitors walk through the ruins of Fort Frederica, which helped the British defend the territory against the Spaniards during the "Bloody Marsh" battle.

Begin your visit at the Visitor Center, where a film places the battle and the ruins in historical context. Then take a self-guided stroll through the grounds, where the fort's ruins include the barracks and magazine. Further down the road, spend a somber moment examining the Bloody Marsh Battle Site and its memorial.
