Muir Woods National Monument
Muir Woods National Monument: Primeval Redwood Forest
“Keep close to Nature’s heart... The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” John Muir is one of America’s most beloved naturalists, an environmental philosopher and poet who advocated for the preservation of the wilderness. He was instrumental in the protection of California’s Sierra Nevadas, including the creation of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks. Discover what inspired him in this coastal forest just north of San Francisco, which is known for over 240 acres of magnificent old-growth redwood trees.
Six miles of trails meander through groves of towering trees along quiet creeks and peaceful hillsides. Wander through a primeval forest of redwoods that are 500-800 years old. Short, easy trails (some of which are paved) make Muir Woods National Monument easy to access and explore. Biking is popular here, and you can also sign up for ranger-led tours and talks about conservation, climate change, and ecological history. Contemplate the power of nature to inspire tranquility. Go for a walk in the woods.
